How to convert ASS to SRT
To convert ASS to SRT, drop your .ass or .ssa file into the converter above and click Download .srt. The converter reads the Dialogue lines, puts them in time order, turns \N line breaks into real ones, and keeps italics, bold and underline. Fonts, colours, positions and karaoke effects are removed, because SRT can’t store them. If the file puts signs or song lyrics in their own styles, untick those styles to leave them out. It is free, needs no signup, and your file never leaves your device.
How it works
- Step 1
Add your ASS file
Drop the .ass or .ssa file onto the box, choose it from your device, or paste its text.
- Step 2
Choose the styles
If the file has more than one style, each is listed with its line count. Untick signs, songs or anything else you don’t want.
- Step 3
Download the .srt
Check the numbered subtitles on the right, then save a file with the same name ending in .srt.
- Step 4
Use it
Put it next to the video for VLC, Plex or your TV, import it into Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve or CapCut, or upload it to YouTube.
What changes when you convert ASS to SRT
- Each Dialogue line becomes a numbered subtitle, sorted by start time. Comment lines are skipped.
- Timings change from hundredths of a second (0:00:01.50) to SRT’s milliseconds (00:00:01,500).
- Line breaks (\N) become real line breaks, and hard spaces (\h) become normal spaces.
- Italic, bold and underline overrides become SRT tags. Fonts, colours, outlines, positions, rotation and karaoke timing are removed, because SRT can’t store them.
- Lines shown at exactly the same time, such as two speakers or a sign over dialogue, are joined into one subtitle, and repeated copies of a line are dropped.
- Vector drawings (shapes drawn with \p) are removed, because they aren’t words.
- Works with ASS (v4.00+) and older SSA (v4) files, saved in UTF-8, UTF-16 or old Windows encodings.

Frequently asked questions
- How do I convert an ASS file to SRT?
Drop the .ass file into the converter at the top of this page, or paste its contents. The SRT version appears straight away. Untick any styles you don’t want, then click Download .srt to save it.
- Is this ASS to SRT converter free?
Yes. It is free with no signup, no watermark and no limit on how many files you convert.
- Is my subtitle file uploaded anywhere?
No. Your browser reads the file and converts it on your device. Nothing is sent to a server, so it works for private or unreleased work too.
- What is the difference between ASS and SRT?
ASS (Advanced SubStation Alpha) stores how subtitles look: fonts, colours, outlines, positions, effects and karaoke timing. It’s the format Aegisub saves and many anime releases use. SRT stores only numbered lines of text with start and end times, plus italics and bold, which is why almost every player, video editor and platform reads it.
- Will I lose the styling?
Yes. SRT has no way to store fonts, colours or positions, so the words show in the player’s own subtitle style at the bottom of the screen. Italics, bold and underline are kept. If you want the styled look, keep the .ass file as well and play it in a player that reads ASS, such as VLC or mpv.
- How do I remove signs and songs from the subtitles?
If the file puts them in their own styles, with names like Signs, OP, ED or Song, the converter lists every style with its line count. Untick the ones you don’t want and they are left out of the SRT. Shapes drawn with vector commands are always left out.
- Does it convert SSA files too?
Yes. SSA (SubStation Alpha) is the older version of the same format. Drop in an .ssa file and it converts the same way.
- Why do some subtitles have two lines from different people?
When two lines in the ASS file start and end at exactly the same moment, such as two speakers talking over each other, they become one SRT subtitle with two lines. Lines that only overlap stay separate; most players show them stacked.
- Can I convert ASS subtitles that are inside an MKV video?
Yes, with the free MKV subtitle extractor. It reads the subtitle tracks inside an MKV file and saves an ASS track straight to SRT, without uploading the video.
- I don't have a subtitle file yet. Can you make one?
Yes. Upload your video to AutoSubtitles and it writes the subtitles for you from the speech, with timings. You can fix any word, then burn styled captions into the video for free, or download SRT, VTT and TXT files with Pro ($9/month).
