How to convert SBV to SRT

To convert SBV to SRT, drop your .sbv file into the converter above and click Download .srt. The converter numbers each caption, changes timings like 0:00:01.000,0:00:03.000 into 00:00:01,000 --> 00:00:03,000, and keeps the text exactly as it is. It is free, needs no signup, and your file never leaves your device.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Add your SBV file

Drop the .sbv file onto the box, choose it from your device, or paste its text.

  2. Step 2

    Check the SRT

The SRT version appears on the right, with every caption numbered.

  3. Step 3

    Download the .srt

You get a file with the same name ending in .srt.

  4. Step 4

    Use it

Import it into Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve or CapCut, or upload it to Facebook or LinkedIn.

What changes when you convert SBV to SRT

  • Each caption gets a number, starting from 1. SBV files have no numbers.
  • The comma between the start and end time becomes SRT’s arrow: 0:00:01.000,0:00:03.000 becomes 00:00:01,000 --> 00:00:03,000.
  • Hours get a leading zero, and the period before the milliseconds becomes a comma.
  • The text stays exactly as it is, line breaks included. SBV has no styling, so there is nothing to lose.
  • Copes with messy files: Windows line endings, a byte order mark, missing blank lines and old Windows text encodings.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert an SBV file to SRT?

Drop the .sbv file into the converter at the top of this page, or paste its contents. The SRT version appears straight away. Click Download .srt to save it.

Is this SBV to SRT converter free?

Yes. It is free with no signup, no watermark and no limit on how many files you convert.

Is my subtitle file uploaded anywhere?

No. Your browser reads the file and converts it on your device. Nothing is sent to a server, so it works for private or unreleased work too.

What is an SBV file?

SBV is the SubViewer caption format YouTube has used for caption downloads. Each caption is a start and end time separated by a comma, then the text, then a blank line. It has no caption numbers and no styling.

Why convert SBV to SRT?

Most video editors and platforms ask for SRT. Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve and CapCut import SRT files, and so do Facebook and LinkedIn. YouTube reads both, so you only need SRT for everything else.

Can I convert SRT back to SBV?

Yes. Open the subtitle converter, drop in the SRT and choose SBV. It also converts to VTT and plain text.

My captions are out of sync after converting. Why?

Converting keeps the timings exactly as they were. If the captions were made for a different cut of the video, shift them all earlier or later with the free subtitle shifter.

I don't have a subtitle file yet. Can you make one?

Yes. Upload your video to AutoSubtitles and it writes the subtitles for you from the speech, with timings. You can fix any word, then burn styled captions into the video for free, or download SRT, VTT and TXT files with Pro ($9/month).
