How to convert subtitle files

Drop an SRT, VTT or SBV file into the converter above, choose SRT, VTT, TXT or SBV, and download the result. The converter detects the format you give it, rewrites the timings and markup for the new one, and keeps bold, italic and underline where the new format allows. It is free, needs no signup, and your file never leaves your device.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Add your file

Drop an .srt, .vtt or .sbv file onto the box, choose it from your device, or paste its text.

  2. Step 2

    Pick a format

Choose SRT, VTT, TXT or SBV. The converted file appears right away.

  3. Step 3

    Download it

Click Download for a file with the same name and the new extension, or copy the text.

  4. Step 4

    Use it

Upload it to YouTube, Vimeo or your course platform, or import it into your video editor.

What the converter handles

  • Reads SRT, WebVTT and YouTube SBV files, and tells you which one it found.
  • Rewrites timings for the new format: commas for SRT, periods for VTT, and SBV’s own style.
  • Keeps bold, italic and underline when converting between SRT and VTT. TXT and SBV get plain text.
  • Copes with messy files: Windows line endings, a byte order mark, missing cue numbers, missing blank lines, and old Windows text encodings.
  • Skips any subtitle whose timing it can’t read, and tells you how many it skipped, instead of failing on the whole file.

Frequently asked questions

Which subtitle formats can I convert?

You can convert from SRT, VTT (WebVTT) and SBV to SRT, VTT, SBV or TXT. Plain text has no timings, so a TXT file can be an output but not an input.

Is the subtitle converter free?

Yes. It is free with no signup, no watermark and no limit on how many files you convert.

Is my subtitle file uploaded anywhere?

No. Your browser reads the file and converts it on your device. Nothing is sent to a server, so it works for private or unreleased work too.

Which format should I use?

Use SRT for video editors and most platforms, including YouTube, Facebook and LinkedIn. Use VTT for web video players and course platforms that ask for WebVTT. Use TXT when you only want the words, such as for a transcript or show notes.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. It works in any modern browser on a phone, tablet or computer. On a phone, tap Choose file and pick the subtitle file from your files.

I don't have a subtitle file yet. Can you make one?

Yes. Upload your video to AutoSubtitles and it writes the subtitles for you from the speech, with timings. You can fix any word, then burn styled captions into the video for free, or download SRT, VTT and TXT files with Pro ($9/month).
