How to convert SRT to VTT

To convert SRT to VTT, drop your .srt file into the converter above and click Download .vtt. The converter adds the WEBVTT header, removes the cue numbers, and changes the comma before the milliseconds to a period. It is free, needs no signup, and your file never leaves your device.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Add your SRT file

Drop the .srt file onto the box, choose it from your device, or paste its text.

  2. Step 2

    Check the VTT

The WebVTT version appears on the right, starting with the WEBVTT line.

  3. Step 3

    Download the .vtt

You get a file with the same name ending in .vtt.

  4. Step 4

    Use it

Add it to an HTML5 video with a track element, or upload it to Vimeo, YouTube or your course platform.

What changes when you convert SRT to VTT

  • The file starts with the line WEBVTT, which every VTT file needs.
  • Cue numbers are removed. VTT doesn’t need them.
  • Timings change from 00:00:01,000 to 00:00:01.000.
  • Bold, italic and underline are kept. Font color tags and positioning codes like {\an8} are removed, because VTT doesn’t support them.
  • Characters that would break a VTT file, like a bare & or <, are escaped so web players read the text correctly.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert an SRT file to VTT?

Drop the .srt file into the converter at the top of this page, or paste its contents. The VTT version appears straight away. Click Download .vtt to save it.

Is this SRT to VTT converter free?

Yes. It is free with no signup, no watermark and no limit on how many files you convert.

Is my subtitle file uploaded anywhere?

No. Your browser reads the file and converts it on your device. Nothing is sent to a server, so it works for private or unreleased work too.

Why does my website need VTT instead of SRT?

The HTML5 video player in every browser only reads WebVTT through the <track> element. If you add captions to a video on your own site, or to a player built on HTML5 video, you need a .vtt file.

Can I just rename .srt to .vtt?

No. A VTT file must start with the line WEBVTT and use a period before the milliseconds, so a renamed SRT usually won’t load. The converter makes both changes for you.

Will my italics survive?

Yes. Bold, italic and underline tags carry over to VTT. Font color tags and SRT positioning codes are removed, because VTT doesn’t support them.

I don't have a subtitle file yet. Can you make one?

Yes. Upload your video to AutoSubtitles and it writes the subtitles for you from the speech, with timings. You can fix any word, then burn styled captions into the video for free, or download SRT, VTT and TXT files with Pro ($9/month).
